The popular weight loss injection Wegovy® is now available in tablet form as well. Both the injection and tablet contain the active ingredient semaglutide, but there are important differences between these treatments, including the doses, how they’re taken, how effective they are, and possible side effects.

Daily Pill or Weekly Injection: Which Fits Your Life Best

Some women choose injections for the stronger average result; others choose the tablet because a daily pill fits their life better. Here's what tends to drive that decision either way.

Choose Wegovy® injections if you:

Choose the Wegovy® pill if you:

Want a more effective treatment

Prefer tablets to self-injecting

Only want to take medication once a week

Would rather take medication every day than weekly

Don’t want to plan your mornings around treatment

Don't mind an 8-hour fast, taking it first thing, and waiting before eating, drinking, or taking other medication

Want to eat and drink when you first wake up

Are happy using a self-injection pen

How They're Taken: Daily Pill vs Weekly Injection

If you’d like to know which is easier to take, the answer depends on what suits you best. Tablets are taken more often than injections and need to be taken with some extra considerations. Injection timings are simpler, but self-injection can be a challenge itself.

For full step-by-step instructions for using Wegovy® injections or pills, see the patient information leaflet that comes with your medication.

How to use Wegovy® injections

Wegovy® injections need to be taken once a week. Ideally, take them at the same time of day each time you inject. Unlike the Wegovy® pill, you can choose a time of day that suits you. You don’t have to worry about meal times either, since you can take injections with or without food.

To take Wegovy® injections, you pick an injection site and prepare your pen before injecting the medication under your skin. Most people say the injection itself is barely noticeable, more of a quick pinch than anything painful. If the idea of self-injecting makes you uneasy before you've even tried it, that's a completely normal reaction. The needle is short and fine, and most people settle into the routine within their first week or 2.

How to take the Wegovy® pill

Taking the pill itself is simple. It’s swallowed whole with a small amount of water. What makes the Wegovy® pill more complicated to take is the restrictions around food, drink, and timing.

  1. You have to fast (not eat) for 8 hours before taking the Wegovy® pill, which is why it’s advised you take it when you first wake up.

  2. You should then take the tablet with a small amount of water, no more than 120ml.

  3. After taking the tablet wait 30 minutes before eating, drinking any more liquids, or taking any other oral medication.

Important: Follow these instructions to ensure your Wegovy® pill is absorbed properly. If they are not followed, then your medication may not be absorbed, and the amount of medication in your body could drop. This can lead to increased appetite and cravings.

The Wegovy® Pill vs Injection Dosing Schedules

Although they have the same active ingredient, Wegovy® injections and pills have different available doses and dosing schedules.

For both Wegovy® injections and pills, you can choose to increase your dose after 4 weeks at your current dose, as long as you haven’t had any strong side effects. However, you can choose to stay on your current dose if it suits you.

Wegovy® Injection Dosing Schedule

Wegovy® injections start at 0.25mg a week, unless you're switching from another GLP-1 treatment and it’s safer to start on a higher dose. Wegovy® injections are taken once a week, so you may be able to increase the dose after 4 doses.

Once you’ve reached your goal weight, you can then find a maintenance dose to help you stay at your new weight. The manufacturer Novo Nordisk lists the maintenance doses as 2.4mg and 7.2mg. In reality, you can stay on any dose of Wegovy® injections long term if it’s right for you. The important thing is whether your dose is right for you, you’re not losing more weight or putting weight back on, and side effects aren’t an issue.
